Tanya Vogel, Director of Athletics
Tanya Vogel is a 25 year intercollegiate athletics professional including 15 years as a head and assistant coach, six years as a senior administrator and three years in her current role.
The Department of Athletics is grounded in the values of determination, commitment and respect. The department strives to bring pride, admiration and loyalty to the students, alumni, faculty and staff of the institution.

Key Functions
Athletics Compliance
Chandra Bierwirth, Associate Athletics Director - Compliance
Athletics Compliance is responsible for:
- Rules compliance and eligibility for student-athletes
- Primary liaison with Admissions, GW Housing, GWorld Office, Office of Student Financial Assistance and the certifying officers in schools
- Policies and procedures that affirm institutional control, a key component of NCAA membership, and institutional certification
Athletics Communications
Brian Sereno, Associate Athletics Director - Athletics Communications
Athletics Communications is responsible for:
- Liaison between the Department of Athletics and the media inside and outside the university community
- Official Athletics website: GWsports.com
- Television coordination, broadcast management
- Historical record keeping
Athletics Development
Jennifer Montgomery, Executive Director - Athletics Development
Athletics Development is responsible for:
- The Buff and Blue Fund: the fundraising arm for the Athletics Department
- Cultivating, soliciting and stewarding members of the community
Athletic Operations and Events
Andrew Lundt, Associate Athletics Director - Operation and Events
Athletics Operations and Events is responsible for:
- The Charles E. Smith Center
- Mount Vernon Campus Athletics Complex
- Barcroft Park
- Liaison between Arlington County and the public/private partnership at Barcroft Park
Educational Support Services
James Hellekjaer, Associate Athletics Director - Educational Support Services
Educational Support Services is responsible for:
- Core competency development, academic support and advising, tutoring, career preparation, leadership development and community service for student-athletes
- Diversity, equity and inclusion programming
External Operations
Andy Ruge, Senior Associate Athletics Director - External Operations
External Operations is responsible for:
- Overseeing, managing and executing marketing, promotions, ticketing and sales strategy for the Department of Athletics
- Primary revenue production for the department
Financial Management
Jihad Ali, Associate Athletics Director - Business Administration
Financial Management is responsible for:
- Purchasing, payments, deposits, budget control, financial reporting and athletic equipment inventory management.
- Facilitating independent auditors and the Office of Financial Reporting and Analysis to satisfy the NCAA annual audit requirements.
- Providing data necessary to complete annual reporting to the Atlantic 10 Conference, the Department of Education, the Internal Revenue Service and to local governments.
Health, Well-being and Human Performance
Chris Hennelly, Associate Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Health, Well-being and Performance
Health, Well-being and Human Performance is responsible for:
- Oversees all health, well-being and human performance aspects of intercollegiate programs, including sports medicine and strength & conditioning
- Insurance related matters
Internal Operations
Danya Ellman, Associate Athletics Director - Internal Operations
Internal Operations is responsible for:
- Collaboration with different administrative offices across the university including Student Affairs, Safety and Security and Human Resources
- Policy and procedures coordination, oversight and management
- Liaising with Human Resources on talent management and onboarding practices; program development and implementation specific to organizational culture, staff leadership training; diversity, equity, and inclusion programming; student-athlete discipline in coordination with Student Rights and Responsibilities, and student leadership development and programming (SAAC and LEAAP)
20 Division 1 Intercollegiate Sport Programs
Every head coach is responsible for oversight of their program: including creating, promoting and maintaining a culture rooted in the values of determination, commitment and respect; recruitment of academically qualified and athletically talented student-athletes, team coaching, individual player development; creating a strategic vision for progress within the program in alignment with the resources and support; and for running a program that is compliant with university, department, NCAA and A-10 (or other conference) rules.
