Sociology at GWU

Undergraduate Program

For the student wishing to pursue undergraduate studies in sociology, The George Washington University provides a distinctive set of experiences, skills, and opportunities. The undergraduate program in sociology at GW provides a solid grounding in sociological theory and research methods. The training provided by a talented and experienced faculty serves as excellent preparation either for graduate work or for immediate employment in social research and related types of jobs.

Washington, DC is an exciting city that enriches the lives of GW students in multiple ways. The city offers a rich social laboratory in which students can acquire and develop new skills in sociological observation and analysis. The wide array of government agencies, lobbying organizations, and think tanks headquartered in Washington provides a range of internships and jobs in which students can apply their newly acquired sociological skills. Graduates of program are in high demand, and many find long-term jobs in agencies and firms in which they interned or were employed during their student days.

Major/Minor Declaration Processes

Students wishing declare a major or minor in Sociology or Criminal Justice should see the Sociology Department's Undergraduate Coordinator, Daina Eglitis. Bring a major/minor declaration form with you, already completed as much as possible. Professor Eglitis will sign off on your declaration form, answer any initial questions that you might have, and assign majors an advisor within the department. If there is a professor here whom you would like as your advisor, let Professor Eglitis know when you meet with her. If you cannot make her regularly-scheduled semester office hours, you can contact Professor Eglitis at dainas@gwu.edu to set up a time to see her.

Students who wish to be Human Services majors or minors should see the Human Services Program Director, Honey Nashman.
