The major in Asian Studies is a broad liberal arts degree incorporating the politics, history, economics, and cultures of Asia. Although the University is known for its strengths in modern and contemporary Asia, students are encouraged to take advantage of courses on pre-modern Asia as well. Four Asian languages are regularly taught at George Washington University: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. For specific information on course requirements, please click here.
Students can take advantage of the numerous Asian cultural resources available in the D.C. Metro area. The Smithsonian Institution’s Freer and Sackler Galleries are but two of the many Asia-related cultural institutions that Washington offers.
For students who are interested, there is also a wealth of internship opportunities in Washington, D.C. This is especially true for those interested in Asian Studies or International Affairs, as the U.S. capital boasts a wealth of NGO’s and think-tanks in addition to the myriad governmental offices and institutions located in Washington.
Students are encouraged to supplement work in Washington, D.C., with study and travel abroad. Students in Asian Studies may be particularly interested in attending official George Washington partner institutions in Australia, Singapore, Korea, and Japan. Of particular interest to those focusing on South Asia is the South India Term Abroad. There is a wide range of affiliated programs as well that offer programs in East, Southeast, and South Asia.
