During the 2002-2003 academic year, Erjen Khilkhanova was a visiting research professor at The George Washington University, affiliated with the Research Program in Social and Organizational Learning. Her stay in the USA was supported by the Junior Faculty Development Program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Her advisor at GWU was Professor Gregory Squires, Department of Sociology. Erjen Khilkhanova is an associate professor at Eastern-Siberian State Academy of Culture & Arts. She is currently teaching courses in the Russian Language and Standards of Speech, Sociolinguistics, and Ethnolinguistics. She is also in charge of several activities in the Department and the Center of Sociolinguistics and Speech Communications, such as research, international and interregional contacts, and fundraising. In 1991 Erjen Khilkhanova graduated from Moscow State University with a double major in Linguistics & Literature. After two years of teaching at the Buryat State University she became a postgraduate student at the Faculty of Philology, Department of German Studies at Moscow State University. In 1997 Erjen received a Ph.D. in Linguistics (major - Discourse Analysis). The topic of her thesis was, "Discourse of the BILD Newspaper as the Object of Linguistic Research". In 1998 and 1999 she received a grant from the Volkswagen Foundation for participation in a faculty development seminar for Young Russian University Teachers at the Ruhr University (Bochum, Germany). Concentration: German language, German literature & German culture (Certificate). Erjen has published extensively in the field of Discourse Analysis, Social Studies, Sociolinguistics, and Functional Linguistics focusing on the study of (re)production mechanisms of various (e.g., ethnocentric, racist) ideologies in mass media discourse and in prejudiced discourse in general. Her book entitled "The Language Construction of Reality in the German Tabloid Press (on Materials of the Bild, Newspaper)" was chosen for digitalization and publication in the OSI's electronic library as one of the best works sponsored by the Research Support Scheme. In addition to the RSS grant, she was awarded a Junior Visiting Fellowship in the Nationalism Studies Program at the Central European University, CRC grant. Lately, her research interests have been mostly in culture, language and ethnic identity.
