Fall 2015 Training Schedule
This Fall, our practices will be on MWF evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. On Monday and Wednesday evenings, we will be practicing in the Hand Chapel on the Mount Vernon Campus. On Fridays, we will be practicing in the West Hall Fitness Center Room 103 (small fitness studio), and if the group is too big to fit in the Fitness Studio, some of us will practice in the West Hall Dance Studio one floor below on Friday nights, also on the Mount Vernon Campus. You must have a working GWorld card in order to get into West Hall. The first two weeks of the semester, we allow any GW student to come for a free trial period. After that, if you decide to join, dues are $60 each semester (plus a $15 fee for membership in JKA/WF, our parent organization).
GW students are welcome to join us at any time, but we encourage you to start at the beginning of the semester when we usually have a beginners class for students with no martial arts experience and students who are new to JKA shotokan karate. No previous karate experience is necessary. A senior student will teach the beginners and those with other martial arts experience the basics of JKA karate so you will know how we punch, block and kick before you join the regular class. We recommend that you come to every practice the first few weeks of the semester if you are a total beginner or a newcomer to JKA (the Japan Karate Association), so you can learn the basics before you join the regular class. You do not need a gi (white karate uniform) to join the club, but if you intend to test at the end of the semester, you need to have a gi to take the test. Most students who decide to stay purchase a gi.
Because we train barefoot, we clean the dojo floor together before each class to avoid injury to our feet. Cleaning the floor is an important part of training. We usually sweep in rank order, with beginners first, followed by white belts, green belts, brown belts, and then black belts. Please try to come to the dojo at least 15 minutes prior to class in order to help clean the floors.
Information for newcomers
We welcome all interested GW students, faculty and staff. It is not necessary to have previous martial arts experience. Total beginners are welcome.
If you are not a GW student and wish to join, please send an email to the club's email address, requesting permission to join. Please explain if you have any prior martial arts experience (if so, please explain the style(s) and organization(s), what rank(s) you achieved, and with whom you studied) and why you are interested in joining. We are only able to accept a limited number of non-GW members, since we are a GW student organization and like to have a majority of GW students as members. If you are a member of JKA, please bring a copy of your JKA dan or kyu certificate. A passport is not acceptable proof of JKA certification. If you do not have a JKA certificate, kindly wear a white belt until after you take your first kyu exam and Sensei Haramoto adjusts your rank.
Below is our practice schedule for the fall.
For directions to GW's Mount Vernon Campus, please click here.
A free shuttle bus (the Vern Express) to/from the Mt. Vernon Campus is available from GW's main campus in Foggy Bottom (pickup in front of Funger Hall on G Street between 22nd and 23rd Streets, NW).
All beginners (including those with previous martial arts experience in another organization) should try to come to every class during the first several weeks of classes when a senior student
will teach the basics of JKA in a separate class just for beginners and newcomers to JKA. Please dress in comfortable workout clothes or wear a white dogi (uniform) and a white belt if you have one.
Everyone should remove all jewelry (rings, necklaces, earrings, etc.) during class for safety reasons.
For those with prior JKA experience, please bring a copy of your last kyu or dan certificate to your first practice and give it to Faculty/Staff Advisor Robert Donnally. If you have trained with another
non-JKA dojo, please bring a copy of your last kyu or dan certificate. Please note that if you do not have an official JKA dan or kyu certificate, you must start by tying a white belt. Your rank will be
adjusted after your first kyu examination with Sensei Haramoto.
If you have any questions, you may also send an e-mail message to firstname.lastname@example.org . Please note that this is the club's email account and may not be checked every day.
Membership dues are $60 per semester and can be paid in cash or check (payable to the George Washington University). Unfortunately, we cannot not accept credit cards or GWorld card payments. Additionally, all green and white belt members must pay an annual fee of $15, which is for membership in JKA/WF, our parent organization.
Brown and black belts must pay for a JKA/WF passport and renew their passports annually.
The fee for a passport is $50 and the passport is good for 5 years. The annual fee to renew one's passport is $15. We collect JKA/WF member dues and passport fees in October or November for the subsequent year since these fees are due December 1. If you join in the spring or summer, you will need to pay the current year's JKA/WF member dues during the semester that you join if you plan to take a kyu test because you must be a member of JKA/WF before you test and again at the end of the year.
Students who wish to take the kyu exam at the end of the semester (i.e. those who wish to be promoted to the next rank) must wear a gi (karate uniform), which can be purchased at any
martial arts store or online and must be a member of JKA/WF, our parent organiziation. One of our members has access to a website and can help students obtain inexpensive gis. Kyu test fees are $28 per person.
