2007-2008 CCHC Champions

WELCOME

Welcome to the web site of the George Washington University's Ice Hockey team. It is our hope that this site will help players, parents, friends, and family members stay informed.

THE TEAM
The team currently plays in the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference Colonial Division (BRHCCD) within the Southern Division III Conference of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Our schedule is made up of a collection of Division II and III ACHA teams from up and down the East Coast. Our team is comprised of graduate and undergraduate students that came from playing prep school, junior A and B, high school, and tier I hockey. The team is run with the help of managers, coaches, league representatives, and supporters.

THANKS
The team would like to thank our parents, volunteer coaches, Fort DuPont Ice Arena, Kettler Ice Complex, the Washington Capitals, GW Rec Sports, and the Student Association for their support.

Colonials Defeat NOVA 10-6, Set to Host ODU for Parent's Weekend
Tommy Noonan got his first start and his first win of the season this past Friday against Northern Virginia Community College. Although GW came out on fire, taking a 4-1 lead into the second period thanks to goals by Melberg, Denise, Kleiner, and Moynihan, a slew of penalties throughout the second and third periods allowed NOVA to stay in the game, largely thanks to the efforts of their goaltender and first forward line. GW was able to continue their scoring throughout the second and third period on goals by Stewart and Pottolicchio. Noonan saved 22 out of 28 shots he saw on the night, many of which on the penalty kill. The Colonials will be gearing up this week to play divisional opponent Old Dominion on Friday.

Colonials Start Season on Right Foot with League Victory Over Salisbury, Lose Heart Breaker to GTown
The Colonials began their season the best way they could: a victory over a league rival. GW won their first game of the season and their first BRHC division game on Friday night against Salisbury University. Salisbury came into the game 1-2 with an impressive win over Richmond, but GW's first line of Denise, Melberg, and Matons put 5 goals in the net with some help from defensemen Folan and Waterman to beat Salisbury 7-3. Andy Reggev got the start in goal and recorded the win with 28 saves. Then, on Saturday to a packed house at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, two goals by Michael Potolicchio gave GW a 2-1 lead over Georgetown going into the third period, but the lead would not hold as Georgetown scored 4 unasnwered goals in the third period as the Colonials lost 5-2. Although a dissapointing loss, it was a great effort by all the GW team, espcially goaltender Jared Hay who had 16 saves in his first game and stopped a number of GTown scoring opporitunities. GW will regroup after their loss to play NVCC and Catholic next weekend.

Colonials Announce 2008-2009 Team, Get Ready for First Weekend of Games
This year, and unprecedented 13 new players from all across the United States will join the core 9 players returning to the team from last year's CCHC Championship season. Forwards Jeff Gabuzda, Calude Matons, Justin Schorr, Evan Katz, Ben Hertz, Mike McLaughlin, and Nick Ciccolo give the GW Colonials some much needed size as well as scoring power to supplement perennial team point-getters Will Denise, Wylie Melberg, Michael Potolicchio, Jonathon Moynihan, and Maxx Kleiner. On defense, newcomers Taylor Guidon and Paul Karolyi add some serious size to the blue line while Ken Atwell brings a quick and mobile game to the already steady talent of David Baratta, Ryan Stewart, David Waterman, and Denis Folan. The Colonials will also be backed up by three brand new freshman goaltenders -- Jared Hay, Andy Reggev, and Tom Noonan -- all of whom look poised to contribute as starters throughout the season. The Colonials could not have asked for a better group of guys to come try out and thank everyone who expressed interest in joining the team.
This team does not have long before they will be tested though. They will face new BRHC rival Salisbury on Friday in their first conference game of the year. Salisbury is 1-2 in conference play and boasts some serious scoring power with 21 goals in 3 games. Then on Saturday, GW will face cross-town rivals Georgetown in what is shaping up to be one of the toughest matchups on GW's schedule this season. The Kettler Capitals Iceplex will be rocking on Saturday night at 10:30pm as the fury of both campuses are sure to join their teams in the rink.

GW Looks to Rebuild Next Season on Top of Returning Core
The 2008-09 season is fast approaching for the Colonials and it should be an exciting one. The Championship coaching tandem of Joseph Baratta and Tim Schliftman will be joined by GW Hockey Alumni David Lamond in his first season behind the bench. The Colonials should have some strong defense this coming season with the return of David Baratta, Ryan Stewart, Denis Folan, and Gordon Scott and a number of exciting defensive prospects will be joining the fray. MVP goaltender Bill Weiderseim will be returning in goal and will also be joined by one of a number of qualified goaltenders set to try out for next season. The Colonials Offense was hit hard by graduation losing perennial high-scorers Ian Manzano, Will Manske, Colin Gilmartin, and Jonathon Hixon as well as clutch-goal-scorer and scrapper Jonathon Salter. GW will remin strong down the middle with Will Denise, Michael Potolicchio, and Jonathon Moynihan serving as centers as well as All-Star winger Wylie Melberg and solid wingers Casey Mitchell and Chris Bruen to serve at their sides. Forwards Maxx Kleiner and Sam Rogers and defenseman David Waterman will be returning from terms abroad and will be expected to contribute immediately.

CCHC Merges with BRHC to form the Blue Ride Hockey Conference Colonial Divison
In a move that shook the ACHA South, some of the best teams from North Carolina to Maryland have joined together to form a select division of teams. Next season, the Colonials will join former CCHC rivals Loyola College and Richmond University as well as BRHC mainstays Old Dominion, Eastern Carolina University, and Christopher Newport and former MDCHA rival Salisbury in this new division which promises to encompass some of the most competitive hockey a single division can hold. The Colonials look forward to the challenge that lies ahead.
