WELCOME
Welcome to the web site of the George Washington University's Ice Hockey team. It is our hope that this site will help players, parents, friends, and family members stay informed.
THE TEAM
The team currently plays in the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference Colonial Division (BRHCCD) within the Southern Division III Conference of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Our schedule is made up of a collection of Division II and III ACHA teams from up and down the East Coast. Our team is comprised of graduate and undergraduate students that came from playing prep school, junior A and B, high school, and tier I hockey. The team is run with the help of managers, coaches, league representatives, and supporters.
THANKS
The team would like to thank our parents, volunteer coaches, Fort DuPont Ice Arena, Kettler Ice Complex, the Washington Capitals, GW Rec Sports, and the Student Association for their support.
GW to Face League Rival ECU in First Game of the Season
GW will head back down to Greenville, North Carolina this Friday to face the East Carolina University Pirates to start the 2009-2010 season. After a successful BRHC Championship last Spring, GW hopes to expand on their 2008-2009 campaign. A large core of returning upperclassmen will certainly benefit the club, but new faces on the team are sure to chip in. New additions to the team include Justin Schorr, Tom Sroka, Jon Quigg, Will Hendricks, Kyle Cole, Brian Gitschier, Matt Marshal, and Terrence Mahoney. Recent graduate and former team captain David Baratta, will now step behind the bench joining BRHC Colonial Coach of the Year Tim Schliftman and assistant coach Daniel Pollock.

GW is Looking for New Players!
The GW Hockey team will be graduating a few seniors this year meaning there will be open spots to fill for next season. If you are a student who is interested in attending the George Washington University who has any experience playing ice hockey, please e-mail team President Jon Moynihan at gwhockey@gwu.edu. Players of all skill levels and interest levels should contact us with your full name, date of birth, height, weight, preferred position (feel free to list more than one), and the last team you played for - and any additional information you'd like.

GW Wins BRHC Colonial Division Playoff! Recieves Numerous End-of-the-Year awards!
On Saturday, February 21st, the George Washington Colonials made another trip to Greenville, North Carolina - home of the ECU Pirates - to play in the BRHC Playoffs. The first event came Friday night before the first game where the Colonials recieved a number of awards including: BRHC Colonial Coach of the Year Joe Baratta & Tim Schliftman, 1st Team All-BRHC Colonial Will Denise, 1st Team All-BRHC Colonial Ryan Stewart, 1st Team All-BRHC Colonial Jared Hay, and 2nd Team All-BRHC Colonial David Waterman. The Baratta family was also on hand to award the Joseph Baratta Memorial Award to the regular season MVP of the BRHC Colonial Division, Sean Berns of ECU. Later that night, after a victory by ECU over CNU in the semi-finals, GW faced Loyola for the fourth time this season. After three periods and an overtime the game was tied 5-5. Goals by Jon Moynihan and Will Denise and two saves by goalie Jared Hay won the Colonials the shootout 2-0 and the game 6-5. The next day was a rematch against ECU, whom GW had upset twice in the regular season. After two periods GW found themselves tied with ECU, but gave up two quick goals at the beginning of the third. The Colonials got one right back, but it would be a slapshot late in the third by David Baratta that would send the game into overtime. Around the minute mark of the first overtime, Wiley Melberg shelfed his own rebound to clinch the title for the GW Colonials. After the game, GW Captain and Senior David Baratta was awarded the BRHC Playoff MVP. In addition, a number of GW players won awards for their academic achievement by being named to the ACHA D3 All-Academic Team (the qualifications were being a junior or senior with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2): David Baratta, David Waterman, Evan Katz, Wiley Melberg, and Michael Potolicchio. Finally, the coaches of the ACHA Southern Division honored Joseph Baratta once more by awarding him the ACHA Southern Division Coach of the Year Award. Without a doubt this season was one of GW's most successful and most exciting. Thank you to all who made it possible, and we look forward to next season.
