Margaret Mead



Dr. Margaret Mead, one of America's foremost anthropologists, is known for her work in such subjects as comparative child psychology, oceanic ethnology, cooperation and competition among primitive peoples, and cross-cultural communications She was born December 16, 1901, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, one of a family of five children. At age 76, Dr. Mead was still an active participant in selected activities. On September 8, 1977, she appeared as a witness in a hearing before the Select Committee on Aging in the U.S. House of Representatives. Her prepared statement regarding age stereotyping and television was entered into the records of the committee's hearing. In both 1976 and 1977, Margaret Mead participated in conversations with young people at national meetings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
