Khorasan lattice design carpet fragment
Iran or Afghanistan, 17th century
Lattice patterns, formed by superimposing two or even three symmetrical grids of stems or vines, were popular in classical carpets manufactured in several provinces in Persia. This recently discovered Khorasan fragment is the top right portion of a much larger carpet whose size is suggested by the impressive scale of the boldly drawn floral motifs imposed on the lattice. The border on the left side of the fragment was taken from the right side of the carpet and positioned here to suggest visual “completeness.” After its exhibition at The Textile Museum, this fragment was reunited with a larger fragment from the same carpet in the Museum of Islamic Art, Berlin.
