GRANTS FOR WOMEN FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) was established in 1981 to honor the late Margaret McNamara and her commitment to the well-being of women and children in developing countries. The purpose of the grant is to support the education of women from developing countries who are committed to improving the lives of women and children in their home countries. Previous grant recipients were studying fields such as agriculture, architecture and urban planning, civil engineering, education, forestry, journalism, nursing, nutrition, pediatrics, public administration, public health, social sciences, and social work.

Requests for application forms for the 2009-10 academic year will be available on 1 December 2008. The deadline for completed applications is 28 February 2009. The MMMF will announce the recipients around 1 May 2009.

ELIGIBILITY
The MMMF invites women who meet all of the following criteria to apply:

  • She has a record of service to women and/or children in her country.
  • She must reside in the U.S. at the time she submits the application.
  • She plans to return to her country in about two years.
  • She can demonstrate financial need.
  • She is enrolled in an accredited educational institution in the U.S. or Canada for academic year 2008-2009 and during the entire period covered by the grant.
  • She must use the grant to continue to study for her degree.
  • She is a citizen of a developing country that is currently eligible to borrow from the World Bank and cannot be a U.S. Green Card holder or Canadian landed immigrant
  • She is at least 25 years old by December 31, 2008.
  • She is not related to any World Bank Group staff member or his/her spouse.
