What are Assistantships?

The George Washington University has three graduate assistantship (GA) options that require work on the GWU campus. These are: graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs), graduate research assistantships (GRAs) and graduate administrative assistantships (GAAs).

Assistantships Awarded by Departments

GTA, GRA and GAA positions vary in terms of payment and duties. Academic departments within the schools and colleges make appointments for these positions.

College of Professional Studies

CPS does not have graduate assistantships.

Columbian College of Arts and Sciences 

The majority of graduate assistantships in CCAS are GTAs. Selection for these positions is made by the specific department at the time of admission. The Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration has GRA positions available. Departments award GAs at the time of admission. Please contact your department chair or program director to determine availability.

Elliott School of International Affairs

The Elliot School of International Affairs generally grants GTAs and GRAs to Ph.D. candidates from the political science and history department.

The Graduate School of Education and Human Development

The Graduate School of Education and Human Development mainly grants GAAs. Some GRAs are made available in the special education department. Please contact your department chair or program director to determine availability.

The GW School of Business

Academic departments at the School of Business award GTAs at the time of admission. Please contact your department chair or program director to determine availability.

School of Engineering and Applied Sciences

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences awards GTAs by academic department at the time of admission. Please contact your department chair or program director to determine availability.

School of Public Health and Health Services

GTA positions at the School of Public Health and Health Services are limited to departments such as epidemiology and biostatistics. Please contact the department chair or program director to determine availability.

School of Medicine and Health Sciences

The School of Medicine and Health Sciences does not award graduate assistantships.

The Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships

The Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships provides general information and a wide variety of assistance with graduate support opportunities. The office also holds informational meetings on a variety of fellowships and provides GW students with workshops and special assistance on aspects of the application process such as essay writing and interviewing.
