STATEMENT REGARDING PART-TIME FACULTY REPRESENTATION ELECTION TO
BE HELD IN OCTOBER 2004 (printer-friendly
version)
The George Washington University and the Service Employees International
Union, Local 500, have reached an agreement, which has been approved
by the Regional Director of the National Labor Relations Board,
that there will be an election to determine whether the Service
Employees will represent The George Washington Universitys
part-time faculty. This election will commence on October 4, 2004
by mail ballot, and eligible voters will have from October 4-19,
2004, to complete and return their mail ballots. The ballots will
be counted on October 22, 2004.
The vote will affect all GW part-time faculty and regular part-time
faculty, excluding faculty in the School of Medicine and Health
Sciences and at the Universitys Hampton Roads campus. Part-time
faculty who will be eligible to vote in the election have taught
in at least two semesters within the following four semesters:
Spring 2003, Fall 2003, Spring 2004, and Fall 2004. Part-time faculty
who have taught in only one of these semesters will not be eligible
to vote.
The University encourages all eligible part-time faculty to exercise
their right to vote on this important matter for the University
and the part-time faculty. To learn more about the issues surrounding
unionization in the classroom, the University encourages part-time
faculty to speak to their deans and department chairs or to Executive
Vice President for Academic Affairs Donald Lehman, and to visit
this Web site at www.unionization.gwu.edu.
