Khorasan lattice design carpet fragment
Iran or Afghanistan, 17th century
This well-worn fragment features a graceful curvilinear version of the popular Persian lattice pattern. It is the only piece known to survive from this carpet, and exhibits typical Khorasan characteristics such as beautiful drawing, a rich color palette, red outlines around motifs and jufti knotting. The multiple background colors, visible across the middle of the carpet, are reminiscent of the compartment design carpet (see carpet #1).
Warp: ivory cotton, Z4s, alternates slightly depressed: weft: ivory cotton, 2Z x 3: pile: wool, 2Z
Knotted pile: AS open left, much jufti and offset knotting, ca. 3038 knots/dm2 = 196/in2 (non-jufti) 0.97 x 2,29m (3'2" x 7'6")
