On Friday, October 22, 2004, the National Labor Relations Board's regional office counted the ballots cast in the election to determine whether certain part-time faculty at The George Washington University chose to be represented by the Service Employees International Union, Local 500.

Of the 644 ballots counted at this time, 328 voted in favor of the union, and 316 voted against the union, a difference of only 12 votes. There are 50 additional ballots that have not yet been opened because questions have been raised about the eligibility of those voters. These questions will be resolved by the National Labor Relations Board. Because their resolution will determine the outcome of the election, there is no final certification of the election results at this time.

Part-time faculty members were eligible to vote if they taught courses during two of the last four semesters, including the Fall 2004 semester. The election was conducted by mail ballot.

The University and the union have provided their positions with respect to the disputed ballots. The University anticipates that a hearing will be held to resolve the question of these ballots which will determine the results of the election. The University thanks its part-time faculty for voting and for its patience throughout this process.
