BACKGROUND:
With the number and severity of natural disasters increasing over the past decade, demand is also increasing for preventative action to reduce damage from hurricanes, tornadoes, severe storms, floods and fires. FEMA initiated Project Impact: Building Disaster Resistant Communities to educate people about proactive steps they can take to protect their community in the event of a natural disaster. Today, nearly 200 Project Impact communities throughout the country have taken steps to make their neighborhoods disaster resistant. After Hurricane Floyd, FEMA visited such Project Impact communities and heard great success stories from people who said their homes and businesses were either saved or suffered less damage as a result of their preventative actions.
