GW’s ELLIOTT SCHOOL TO HOST ANNUAL SHAPIRO LECTURE WITH LEON FUERTH, FORMER NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR TO VICE PRESIDENT AL GORE

EVENT:

The George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs will host the annual Shapiro Lecture.  This year’s speaker will be Leon Fuerth, J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro professor of International Affairs at the Elliott School and formerly the national security advisor to Vice President Al Gore. Fuerth will discuss the topic, “Revisiting the End of History: The Coming of a New Historical Era.”

Background:

Leon Fuerth was the national security advisor for Vice President Al Gore and served on the Principals’ Committee of the National Security Council.  A Gore staff member since 1985, Fuerth spent his early career as a foreign service officer before beginning work on Capitol Hill.  In the early 1980s, he worked with then-Congressman Al Gore on issues of arms control and strategic stability.  When Gore was elected to the Senate, Fuerth joined his staff as senior legislative assistant for national security.  As the Vice President’s national security advisor from 1993 to 2001, Fuerth created and managed five bi-national commissions with Russia, South Africa, Egypt, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan, which turned the Vice President’s vision of forward engagement in America’s foreign affairs into a practical reality.
