George Stoner

George Stoner, former director of admissions and ardent supporter of Gelman Library, died Dec. 27, 2010, at 84.

Mr. Stoner served the George Washington University and its community for 50 years. As the director of admissions, he recruited students both internationally and nationally and helped to develop the STAR PREP, Colonial Challenge, and Alumni Admissions programs. Following his tenure with the Office of Admissions, he joined the Office of Enrollment Management on a part-time basis, as special assistant to the executive director.

In 1996, Mr. Stoner was honored with one of the most prestigious awards bestowed by the university, the George Washington Award. Established in 1976, the award gives special recognition to members of the GW community whose accomplishments on behalf of the institution have had a broad impact and whose service has been above and beyond that which is usual or expected. In 2005, he was also awarded the Service Award from GW's Student and Academic Support Services. Mr. Stoner was also a member of GW's Heritage Society, which honors donors who have chosen to support the university through planned gifts.

"George recognized the important role of recruiting students abroad in making GW an internationally recognized leader in higher education," says GW Alumni Association President Laura Taddeucci Downs, BA '92, MA '95. "Thousands of alumni knew him through the STAR campus tour guide program. He was a wonderful man who dedicated his life to GW and will be greatly missed."
