The 1960s

Paul B. Ebert, JD '63, Virginia's longest-serving commonwealth's attorney, was honored for his decades of service to the community with a portrait to be hung at the Prince William County Courthouse.

Rafael Guzman, LLB '64, delivered the keynote speech at the commencement ceremony for graduates of the Concord Law School of Kaplan University, the nation's leading online law school. Mr. Guzman is an expert on the multi-state bar examination, on which he lectures to law graduates across the country.

In June, Ira "Ike" Lee Sorkin, JD '68, received an honorary doctorate from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to mark his dedicated support of the university and of Israeli issues in general. Mr. Sorkin is a partner at the law firm of Dickstein Shapiro LLP.

Kenneth A. Latimer, JD '69, a finance lawyer in the Chicago area, has been listed in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business.

The 1970s

Richard Buhrman, LLM '70, has had a scholarship established in his honor at Duke University School of Law by the Duke University Estate Planning Council. Mr. Buhrman has served as chairman of the council for the past 14 years.

Marc Fleischaker, JD '71, is the chair of the board of directors for the National Health Law Program, a nonprofit law firm that works to secure health rights for those in need. Mr. Fleischaker is also chairman emeritus of Arent Fox LLP.

J. Rodman Steele Jr., LLM '71, has joined the Boca Raton, Fla., office of Duane Morris LLP. Mr. Steele specializes in trademark and copyright matters, and has provided pro bono counsel to many nonprofit organizations and educational institutions in Florida.

A senior partner at the law firm of Antonelli, Terry, Stout & Kraus LLP, Donald Stout, JD '72, has been appointed to the board of directors of Augme Technologies Inc., an end-to-end mobile marketing platform.

Bruce Zagaris, BA '69, JD '72, LLM '73, has published International White Collar Crime: Cases and Materials (Cambridge Univ. Press, 2010). His article, "International Enforcement Law Trends for 2010 and Beyond: Can the Cops Keep Up with the Criminals," appeared in XXXIV Suffolk Transnational Law Review. Mr. Zagaris continues to edit the monthly International Enforcement Law Reporter and also teaches a course on international white-collar crime at the University of Montana Law School.

A partner with Fulbright & Jaworski LLP, Richard M. Farmer, JD '74, was appointed a council member of the Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Section (SEERIL) of the International Bar Association. SEERIL coordinates activities of environment, health and safety law, international construction projects, mining law, oil and gas law, power law, and water law.

President Obama has designated Irving Williamson, JD '75, vice chairman of the U.S. International Trade Commission. Mr. Williamson has more than 40 years of experience in the international and trade policy fields, having previously served as president of Williamson International Trade Strategies Inc., and as a consultant to USAID and to several countries.

Carmen Espinosa, JD '76, has become the first Hispanic judge to be voted to Connecticut's Appellate Court. Previously, Judge Espinosa worked as an assistant U.S. attorney and as a special agent investigating terrorism and white-collar crime.

Susan Foreman Jordan, JD '76, partner and co-chair of the employee benefits and compensation planning practice group of Fox Rothschild LLP, was named one of Pittsburgh's most notable women at the 6th Annual Celebrate & Share, Women of Achievement awards dinner. Funds raised from the event went to benefit Cribs for Kids Infant Safe Sleep Initiative.

Janine Landow-Esser, JD '76, a partner at Quarles & Brady LLP, was selected for inclusion in the 2011 Illinois Super Lawyers magazine. Ms Landow-Esser specializes in environmental and occupational safety and health administration law.

Stanley B. Edelstein, JD '77, has been certified as a Green Advantage practitioner after passing the national certification exam. Mr. Edelstein practices construction law and counsels clients on issues related to sustainable construction.

In March, Jeri L. Whitfield, JD '77, spoke at the investiture ceremony of Judge Catherine C. Eagles, JD '82, who was appointed to the U.S. District Court, Middle District of North Carolina. Though their time at GW did not overlap, the two became friends in 1984 while practicing at the same firm.

Richard Byrne, JD '78, was named Pittsburgh Best Lawyers' intellectual property lawyer of 2011 by Best Lawyers America. Mr. Byrne is a director at the Webb Law Firm, where he serves as both secretary and chair of the management committee.

Deborah Cohn, JD, '78, has been elected a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. She practices at Paley Rothman and resides in Bethesda, Md.

Barbara G. Werther, JD '78, has joined the Washington D.C., office of Ober Kaler, where she is part of the construction group. Ms Werther has been recognized as one of the country's leading construction and government contract lawyers in Best Lawyers America, Chambers USA, and Washington D.C.'s Best Lawyers.

Michael J. Jordan, '79, was recently selected for inclusion in the 2011 edition of The Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Jordan was listed under four areas of practice—alternative dispute resolution, commercial litigation, health care law, and insurance law.

Randall S. Arndt, JD '81, a partner at Schottenstein Zox & Dunn Co. LPA, has been selected for inclusion on the 2011 Ohio Super Lawyers list.

Wendi Kotzen, JD '81, has been elected to the American College of Tax Counsel. Ms Kotzen is a partner in the real estate tax practice group at Ballard Spahr and advises clients on tax issues in connection with real estate transactions, mergers, acquisitions, labor issues, and litigation matters.

Steve Hirschfield, JD '82, founder and CEO of the Employment Law Alliance, was presented with the 2011 Legal Marketing Association Bay Area Chapter's Rella Lossy Award, which celebrates achievements in legal marketing.
William Murray, JD '82, has been appointed associate justice for the Third District Court of Appeals by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Mr. Murray most recently served as a judge on the San Joaquin County Superior Court.

Collyn Peddie, JD '82, argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Goodyear Luxembourg v. Brown, which will redefine general jurisdiction of foreign manufacturers.

A partner at Gross McGinley LLP, Susan Ellis Wild, JD '82, was named in Super Lawyers for her work in general litigation.

Michael Zimmer, JD '82, will serve as chief deputy director of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs as well as director of the Michigan Administrative Hearing System under the appointment of Steven Hilfinger—the director of the newly organized Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

In May, Barton D. Day, JD '83, joined Polsinelli Shughart PC as a shareholder in its environmental and natural resources practice.

Michael Gottfried, JD '83, has been listed in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business, for his contributions to intellectual property law at Duane Morris LLP.

Mark Bohannon, JD '86, was named vice president of corporate affairs and global public policy at Red Hat, a computer software company.

Stuart Harvey, JD '86, has been named CEO of Ceridian Corp., a leading provider of human resources and benefits solutions. Previously, Mr. Harvey was CEO at Elavon Inc., a global payment solutions organization and subsidiary of
U.S. Bancorp.

Kenneth Levine, JD '87, a founding partner of Nelson Levine de Luca & Horst, was installed as president of the National Association of Subrogation Professionals (NASP), the world's largest insurance subrogation association.

Andrew Reidy, JD '87, has joined Dickstein Shapiro LLP's Washington, D.C., office as a partner. Mr. Reidy is ranked among Chamber's USA's top policyholder attorneys, and was co-chair of Howrey's insurance recovery practice prior to joining Dickstein Shapiro.

Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers has listed Andres Benach, JD '88, for his expertise in deportation and asylum issues.

John Hearn, JD '89, has been appointed the city attorney of Coral Springs, Fla., by its city commission. Mr. Hearn has served Coral Springs as deputy city attorney for 10 years, prior to which he was the city's assistant attorney.

Andrew B. Katz, JD '89, has joined property attorney Brian L. Belles to form Belles Katz LLC, a firm specializing in intellectual property law.

Brian P. Kerwin, JD '89, a partner in Duane Morris LLP's corporate and finance practice groups, has been listed in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business.

The 1990s

Gerald P. Farano, JD '91, has joined the Washington office of Jones Day as a partner focusing on energy industry transactions.

Linda Kornfeld, JD '91, has joined the Los Angeles offices of Jenner & Block LLP, where she will lead the firm's litigation and counseling practice on the West coast. Before joining Jenner & Block, Ms. Kornfeld was a managing partner at Dickstein Shapiro.

Ian D. Meklinsky, BA '88, JD '91, a partner in the labor and employment law department of the law firm of Fox Rothschild LLP, has been elected to a three-year term on the firm's executive committee.

Formerly a partner in the Tyson's Corner office of Patton Boggs, Greg Rupert, LLM '91, recently joined the Falls Church, Va., office of Reed Smith as partner.

Richard D. Tuschman, JD '91, has joined the Miami office of Duane Morris' employment, labor, benefits and immigration practice as a partner. Mr. Tuschman specializes in labor and employment litigation in both federal and state courts.

Brad A. Gordon, JD '92, was named senior vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary of the Providence, R.I.-based Gilbane Building Co., the nation's fifth largest construction management firm.

In May, Craig Seebald, JD '92, joined the Washington, D.C. office of Vinson & Elkins, where he will continue to focus on defending companies in all aspects of antitrust.

T. Sky Woodward, JD '92, has been named one of Maryland's Top 100 Women by Maryland business publication The Daily Record. A civil litigation attorney in Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice PLLC's Baltimore office, Ms. Woodward was honored for her professional accomplishments and mentoring, as well as her service to legal, business, and civic organizations.

In May, Alan Model, JD '93, was installed as president of the Essex County Bar Association. Mr. Model is a shareholder in Littler Mendelson's Newark office. His practice includes defending employment discrimination cases and complying with the National Labor Relations Act.

Evan A. Raynes, JD '93, has joined intellectual property law firm Roetzel & Andress as a partner in the Washington D.C. office. Mr. Raynes' practice specializes in trademark and unfair competition law as well as a range of copyright and advertising issues.

Joseph Chan, JD '94, has joined the Shanghai office of Sidley Austin LLP as partner. Mr. Chan specializes in equity funds and portfolio investments, and has represented strategic buyers, funds, portfolio companies, and investment banks.

Debra Erenberg, JD '94, has moved to Chicago to serve as Midwest regional director of Amnesty International USA.

Lee D. Hoffman, JD '94, an attorney with Pullman & Comley LLC, has been appointed co-chair of Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy's energy policy working group, which will advise the new administration on energy policy. Mr. Hoffman is also the vice chair of the public utilities section and the treasurer of the environmental section of the Connecticut Bar Association, and was named to the 2011 Connecticut Super Lawyers list in the area of energy and natural resources.

David H. Jacobson, JD '94, has been named partner at Fuller and Fuller LLP, located in New York City. The firm specializes in employment-based immigration law.

Richard J. Angell, JD '96, has been named chair of Parsons Behle & Latimer PC's environmental, energy and natural resources department. Mr. Angell advises and represents clients on environmental-related litigation and compliance.

Yasser M. El-Gamal, JD '96, has joined the intellectual property practice at Dickstein Shapiro LLP. Mr. El-Gamal specializes in patent litigation and prosecution covering a broad range of technologies.He previously worked as a patent examiner with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

In Washington, D.C., Jonathan Tarnow, BA '93, JD '96, is partner of the education law team in Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP's government and regulatory affairs practice group. Mr. Tarnow specializes in the Higher Education Act, particularly matters related to student financial aid.

Henry Liu, JD '97, has joined Pepper Hamilton LLP as a partner in the affordable housing and community development practice of the firm's financial services practice group. Mr. Liu specializes in real estate transactions and economic development.

Joseph Mastrosimone, JD '98, has accepted a position as an associate professor of law at the Washburn Law School in Topeka, Kan. His position will begin in the fall 2011 semester, and his teaching and scholarship will focus on legal research, writing, labor, and employment issues.

The 2000s

Stephen Belisle, JD '00, has been elected partner of intellectual property law firm Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper & Scinto. Mr. Belisle's practice focuses on patent and trademark litigation in the U.S. district and appellate courts and a variety of other fields.

Todd Carpenter, JD '00, has been made partner of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, a legal services provider to technology, life sciences, and growth enterprises. Mr. Carpenter specializes in corporate finance and corporate law and governance.

Jonathan Coppess, JD '01, has been selected to serve as chief counsel to the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. Mr. Coppess most recently served as administrator of the Farm Service Agency, where he oversaw agency operations.

Pallavi Rai Gullo, JD '01, is the new managing attorney at the Jacob Burns Community Legal Clinics at the George Washington University Law School.

Ernesto Hernandez, JD '01, has been promoted to full professor of law, with tenure, by the Chapman University School of Law in Orange County, Calif.

Lucy S. Lee, JD '01, has been promoted to partnership at Caplin & Drysdale, where previously she was an associate in the international tax, private client, and tax controversies practice group.

Eric B. Meyer, JD '01, has been elected partner at Dilworth Paxson LLP. Mr. Meyer most recently served in the labor and employment group and the litigation department at the firm's Philadelphia office. He specializes in litigation and counsel on labor issues.

Robert H. Dietrick, MA '01, JD '02, was named partner at Duane Morris LLP. A former prosecutor, Mr. Dietrick specializes in white-collar crime and regulatory and civil practice. He has served as a special assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Tennessee and in the district attorney general's office in Nashville.

Stephen M. LaRose, JD '02, has been elected to partnership at Nixon Peabody LLP. Mr. LaRose specializes in business litigation, including financial services, securities, and hedge funds.

Rafael Nendel-Flores, JD '02, partner at the Irvine office of Fisher & Phillips LLP, has been elected to the board of directors for the Hispanic Bar Association of Orange County.

Ming Tao Yang, JD '02, has been elected partner at the intellectual property firm Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett, & Dunner, LLP. Mr. Yang specializes in litigation and patent infringement in the U.S. International Trade Commission and federal district courts.

Joseph E. Palys, JD '04, has been named partner of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett, & Dunner, LLP. Mr. Palys specializes in patent litigation in the software and electromechanical technology field. He also represents clients in patent infringement suits that involve complex technologies in district courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission.

Robert J. Kimmer, JD '05, has joined the Washington, D.C., office of Rader, Fishman & Grauer LLC as a senior attorney. Mr. Kimmer is currently a member of the Supreme Court Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, the International Trademark Association, and the American Intellectual Property Law Association.

Christina Zanette, JD '05, has joined the Washington, D.C., office of Bryan Cave LLP, an international law firm. Ms Zanette specializes in global issues and export control matters.

David Belczyk, JD '06, wrote Elynia (Dark Coast Press 2011), an examination of diverse, interconnected characters over four generations. Mr. Belcyzk has previously published two poetry collections, with a third scheduled for a late summer release.

Fish & Richardson added C. Matthew Rozier, JD '06, as an associate in its IP litigation group in Washington, D.C. Mr. Rozier was previously an associate at Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox.

In November, Georgine Kryda, JD '07, completed her LLM in taxation at the University of Denver.
