Bernard Katzen

Bernard Katzen, AA '34, MD '38, a longtime supporter of medical research and care at the GW Medical Center, passed away on Aug. 3.

Dr. Katzen was the first of six family members to attend GW and the first of four Katzens to earn a degree from its School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Along with his wife, Mildred, AA '45, BA '46, late brother Cyrus, and sister-in-law Myrtle, Dr. Katzen supported GW in several ways, including raising awareness and support for the GW Cancer Institute and, most recently, the creation of the Dr. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Cancer Research Center.

Dr. Katzen served in the U.S. armed forces in World War II and was a survivor of Normandy Beach D-Day, according to an obituary in The Washington Post. After the war, he opened a family practice, which he maintained for 49 years.
