Reunion 2007

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Reunion 2007 celebrations this year. The class of 1962 enjoyed dinner at the Georgetown Club on June 23, and the classes of 1957, 1967, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1997, and 2002 celebrated on campus Sept. 28-30.

Class Dinner and Award Ceremony


Montgomery County (Md.) Executive Isiah “Ike” Leggett, LLM ’76; Dean Frederick M. Lawrence; and Catherine Leggett at the 2007 Class Dinner and Award Ceremony. Leggett was the 2007 recipient of the J. William Fulbright Distinguished Public Service Award. Also honored that evening was Eric Sirulnik, LLM ’70, with the Jacob Burns Award for Extraordinary Service to the Law School.

The Alumni Culinary Experience

Law alumni have enjoyed several culinary delights this season. On July 26, the Washington Wine Academy conducted a wine tasting in the Michael K. Young Faculty Conference Center. Chocolate was the food of choice at the Alumni Chocolate Tasting on Oct. 18. Hosted by Binta Robinson, JD ’06, alumni sampled 10 different types of chocolates provided by Kingsbury Chocolates.

Alumni Abroad

Berlin, Germany, and Paris, France, provided the backdrops for two Law Alumni Dinners this season. On July 26, Professors David Fontana and Donald C. Clarke joined German alumni for dinner at the elegant Französischer Hofst in downtown Berlin. In Paris, law alumni enjoyed a classic French meal at Chez René in the Latin Quarter on Oct. 23. The dinner was hosted by John T. McLoughlin, JD ’76. Law School representatives in attendance included Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Steven L. Schooner, LLM ’89; Professor Joshua I. Schwartz; and Professor Christopher R. Yukins.

Alumni Lecture Series

The Office of Law Alumni Relations has teamed up with GW Law professors to talk about interesting, relevant topics. On July 11, Professor Donald Braman led a discussion titled “Beyond the Gunfight,” which explored gun control laws after the Virginia Tech shootings. “Religious Expression in the Public Schools—Contemporary Issues” was the topic on Oct. 24 and was led by Professor Ira “Chip” Lupu, F. Elwood and Eleanor Davis Professor of Law; and Professor Robert Tuttle, JD ’91, the David R. and Sherry Kirschner Berz Research Professor of Law and Religion.

Alumni and Student Golf Outing

The 2007 GW Law Golf Outing at Westfields Golf Club was a terrific success. Fifteen teams of students, alumni, faculty, staff, and guests played in a four-person scramble outing on Aug. 25. The winning team included Professor Spencer Overton, SBA President Bryan King, SBA Student-Alumni Relations Chair Matt Haynie, and 3L Chris Higgins. New Jersey Baseball Outing

Latino Law Alumni in Puerto Rico

In conjunction with the Hispanic National Bar Association’s Annual Meeting, the GW Latino Law Alumni Association gathered at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Oct. 4.

Wine Tasting With Experience

In a format similar to last spring’s “Coffee with Experience,” 15 law alumni from as many practice areas gathered in the Student Conference Center on Oct. 9 to impart their knowledge and experience to eager students. This time, participants sampled a selection of wines while they chatted.

On Oct. 18, Law School alumni in Houston enjoyed a private tour of the Museum of Fine Arts of Houston followed by refreshments at the trendy Hotel Zaza. Thanks to our hosts Brad Irelan, JD ’86; Leta Seletzky, JD ’02; and Jacob DeLeon, JD ’02.

NBA Reception

Atlanta was the setting for this year’s National Bar Association Annual Meeting. GW Law School’s Black Law Alumni Association hosted a well attended reception during the week-long meeting, hosted by BLAA President Will Wilder, JD ’06, and Associate Dean for Trial Advocacy Alfreda Robinson, JD ’78.

Other Events

Law Alumni at the Theater

On July 21, Law Alumni were treated to a theater-themed reception at the Law School and then transported to the Kennedy Center for a viewing of the famed production, The Phantom of the Opera. Shakespeare was the theme on Nov. 8 when law alumni and students met for dinner and an evening of The Taming of the Shrew at the Lansburgh Theater.

Law Alumni Around the Town

Alumni happy hours continue to draw large crowds in the Washington, D.C., area. American Bar Association Reception

This year’s American Bar Association Annual Meeting was held in San Francisco on Aug. 10. GW Law School was on hand to greet both the local and out-of-town law alumni at a reception in the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel.

Challenges of Municipal Governance

On Oct. 23, New York Law School alumni were hosted by Richard H. Champion, JD '76, to learn about the finer points of municipal governance. At the 3 West Club in Manhattan, alumni listened to Bernard Gordon, JD ’73, mayor of Pleasantville, N.Y.; and Pat Menna, mayor of Red Hook, N.J., describe the trials and tribulations of managing a “small town.”

Virginia Bar Swearing-In Brunch

Senior Associate Dean Steven L. Schooner, LLM ’89, welcomed GW Law’s newest members of the Virginia State Bar. On Oct. 29, GW Law hosted a brunch for the graduates and their families prior to the swearing-in ceremony.

Happy Hour in Philadelphia

Philadelphia was the setting for another regional event this season at the Mission Grill in downtown Center City on Nov. 8. Hosted by Kory Grushka, JD ’06, Law School alumni enjoyed networking and
good conversation.
