Fall Alumni Breakfast

This September, Dean Young hosted a breakfast for Washington, D.C., area alumni who have pursued public interest careers. This event was organized with the extensive involvement of Danielle Chappell, JD ’99, who serves as program director for Lawyers for Children America. Chappell is an active member of the Public Interest Chapter of the Law School Alumni Association.

At the breakfast, Dean Young, Assistant Dean Joan Strand, and Jim Lovelace of the Career Development Office updated the alumni on public interest accomplishments at the Law School. Among the topics covered were:

  • The Law School’s Pro Bono Program, which encourages all students to perform volunteer legal services in the community, is thriving and growing in popularity with students. Under this program, now in its second year, students who perform 60 or more hours of volunteer services receive special recognition at graduation.
  • Two recent alumni, Laura Rinaldi, JD ’01, and Margarita Guzman, JD ’02, have received prestigious two-year Equal Justice Works Fellowships to work for the Children’s Law Center and the Urban Justice Center, respectively. Rinaldi, along with Rebekah Gleason, JD ’00, also received the Frederick B. Abramson Public Service Fellowship, to be used as partial compensation for one year’s employment with a nonprofit service organization or public interest law firm in Washington, D.C. Gleason is with Good Shepherd Ministries.
  • The Law School’s financial programs aimed at students and alumni who take public interest positions (summer subsidies, school-year fellowships, and the Loan Reimbursement Assistance Program) continue to provide much-needed assistance to many deserving students and alumni each year. The Law School is currently engaged in a special fundraising effort targeted at these worthwhile programs, as well as the Jacob Burns Community Legal Clinics.
