Historic Pennsylvania Avenue.

The year 1882 was an excellent period to denote the importance of "The Avenue." Willard's Hotel was a prime location for transacting business which was done in the thick cigar smoke of the Peacock Lounge. The telegraph interests seem to coalesce with the B&O Railroad which assisted in carrying the lines from city to city. All sorts of omnibuses darted between the horsecars as they turned the corner of fifteenth street in front of the U.S. Treasury. In the mid-distance, one can see Boss Alexander Shepherd's Centennial Building.
