The Big Parade of 1889.1978. 44x66.

"The Big Parade" of '89 was produced by the Knights' Templars, a Masonic Organization, on October 8, 1889. The Evening Star newspaper of the next day heaped great praise upon the organizers and congratulated the stores and buildings which had such brilliant flags and decorations. Many landmarks are seen: Frank Ward's Alderney (windmill-operated) Dairy, Ben Franklin's statue, Saks Dry Goods Store, the spire of the Metropolitan Baptist Church, the twin towers of the old bank building at the corner of Seventh Street and the Avenue, Washington Safe Deposit, Thomas Dowling's auction house, the Globe Theatre, and Sheriff's Coal Company. The whole scene is strewn with hundreds of electric wires, all part of the lovely panorama of Pennsylvania Avenue in times gone by.
