The Master Painter.1980. 43x36.

The Old Master Painter is the religious muralist, John DeRosen who at 91, was still working hard in his studio across the hall. A Polish nobleman whose father Jan Henryk DeRosen, was the court painter to Czars Alexander II and Nicholas II. John was Paderewski's attache at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, after having served the BEF and the French Army. He came to America to decorate the Polish Pavilion of the New York World's Fair in 1939. He did many distinguished, religious works in the U.S. and Europe, including the mosaic dome of St. Louis Cathedral and the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

Some months after the painting was finished, we set it up in John's studio in order to make "nature imitate art." By this time John was painting a small panel to present to his friend the Polish Pope when he came to Washington. We fully expected a visit from the Pope to Gallery Place but...alas!
