Facade. 1976. 28x36.

The facade of the Le Droit building was a delightful amalgam of many styles of American commercial decoration, which therefore seemed to be a fitting tribute to the bicentennial year in which it was painted. The artist and his student Bill Reynolds are sitting in the window of the studio while Gabriel, seen in the next window, patiently cuts his customer's hair for $1.25, which will soon be deposited in his heirloom wind-up, iron cash register behind him. The HiBoy Donut Shop was a great gathering place from 1960 on. The artist figures that he had eaten over 10,000 donuts there in his 32 year tenancy. A loving glimpse of America the beautiful in times gone by.
