| The Rosenwald Plate. Deep-bite etching in color. | |
 | The deep-bite etching and the plate from which it was painted were commissioned by the great print collector, Lessing J. Rosenwald. They were intended as a demonstration of deep-bite and open-bite etching techniques and also viscosity printing. The viscosity process allows the artist to print multiple colors on a single plate by using rollers of different hardness and colors of different viscosity or "oiliness." Lessing Rosenwald took a great personal interest in innovative, modern as well as traditional print techiniques as he collected not only the prints but the plates and blocks as well. This plate and half of the edition from it are now part of the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art. A second plate, The Skirmish, was purchased by Mr. Rosenwald at the artist's 1965 exhibition at the Mickelson Gallery in Washington. Mr. Rosenwald was a patron of the artist and purchased many of his prints over the years, a number of which are part of the Print Collection at the NGA. The artist would annually bring his students from the Corcoran and GWU to Alverthorpe Gallery in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania to meet Mr. Rosenwald who delighted in personally showing the highlights of this great collection. |
