Saint Francis. 1970-1971. 5 7/8x5 7/8. Engraving.

This intricate engraving is based on the legend of Saint Francis, who went out into the countryside to preach to the birds when men would not listen to his words. The intricate landscape in the background is identifiably the Umbrian town of Assisi, a bit updated from Saint Francis' time. A friend of the artist, with ornithological interests, admired the accuracy of the depiction of the different species of birds, but commented that some of the birds shown were ground birds that would never sit in trees. So much for artistic license unintended! Edition of 75.
