"Creation and Re-Creation:

Modern Korean Fiction and Its Translation"

EVENT: The George Washington University's Hahn Moo-Sook (HMS)
Colloquium series in the Korean Humanities is holding its 6th annual
meeting on Saturday, October 30, 1999. Internationally known Korean
authors, Pak Wan-so and Choe In-ho, talk about their creative efforts.
Two of their translators, Bruce Fulton and Yu Young-Nan, discuss issues
that arise in translating literary works into another language. A panel of four GW
professors, Peter Caws, Alf Hiltebeitel, and Young-Key Kim-Renaud, and
Peter Rollberg, who have been active as translators and/or researchers on
translation theory, will make commentaries. Colloquium participants will
have a chance to reflect on how a culture-specific experience and
aesthetic sense may be conveyed to the audience of different linguistic
and cultural backgrounds.

WHEN: Saturday, October 30 (9:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.)
A Korean buffet lunch is served. Book sales and signing will take place

BACKGROUND:

The HMS Colloquium in the Korean Humanities Series at GW provides a forum
for academic discussion of Korean arts, history, language, literature, thought and
religious systems in the context of East Asia and the world.  The Colloquium
series is made possible by an endowment established by the estate of
Hahn Moo-Sook, one of Korea's most honored writers, in order to uphold
her spirit of openness, curiosity, and education. This year's colloquium is
co-sponsored by GW's Sigur Center for Asian Studies and The Korea Society.
