GW Strokes to Third
The GW Womens Crew Novice 8-B boat won its grand finals event
at the 2002 Verizon Atlantic 10 Womens Rowing Championship at
Cooper River Park in Collingswood, NJ. The Novice 8-A boat finished
second, behind A-10 team champions University of Massachusetts. Overall
the Colonials finished third in the championships with 23 points.
The US Naval Academy crews won seven events at the 15th Annual George
Washington Invitational Crew Classic to capture the Gilbert H. Hood,
Jr. Point Trophy. The wins garnered the Midshipmen 66 team points, just
two more than the University of Virginia Cavaliers. Crosstown rival
Georgetown finished in third with 43 points, and GW tied Marietta College
for fourth place with 29 points.
The Cavaliers womens team, ranked 12th in the nation at
the start of the April 13 event and took home the Howard Wilkins Bowl
for the seventh consecutive year.
Temple University won this years mens varsity eight race,
bringing home the Oliver T. Carr Bowl for the third consecutive year.
Hane Named Most Outstanding Tennis Performer
Sophomore Matt Hane and freshman Matt Treadgold were named to the Atlantic
10 All-Conference mens tennis team in voting conducted among the
conferences head coaches. Hane also was named the A-10s
Most Outstanding Performer. Together, they helped lead GW to the Atlantic
10 championship final.
The 2001 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, Hane powered his way through
the A-10 tournament winning all three singles matches at No. 1 and posting
a 21 record at No. 1 doubles at the Oxford Athletic Club in Oxford,
PA, last month. Hane was one of only two George Washington players to
win a singles match in the championship final against Richmond. The
Colonials finished second to Richmond with Hane defeating his counterpart,
Niki Doll, 63, 62.
Treadgold went 20 in the A-10 Championship at No. 2 singles and
10 at No. 2 doubles. In his first season of collegiate tennis,
Treadgold posted a 123 record while playing at Nos. 2, 3 and 4
singles and a 9-5 doubles record, all at No. 2.
The Colonials (167) won 16 matches, including a 10-match win streak,
in the first season at their new home facility on GWs Mount Vernon
Campus.
Karl Welcomes a New Carl to Colonials
Point guard Carl Elliott (Brooklyn, NY/Trinity-Pawling) has signed a
National Letter-of-Intent with The George Washington University, head
basketball coach Karl Hobbs has announced. He is GWs fifth signee
for 2002-03.
The 6-3, 210-pound Elliott averaged 15 points, eight assists, six steals
and four rebounds per game while shooting 83 percent from the free throw
line for Trinity-Pawling as a senior. In addition to his basketball
prowess, Elliott also was a standout wide receiver and a running back
for Trinity-Pawling as well as a sprinter for the track team at Trinity-Pawling.
The Pride posted a record of 203 (.869) during Elliotts
senior season under coach Bill Casson. The Pride finished third in the
Class B Division of the New England Prep School Athletic Association.
We are very fortunate to get Carl Elliott, Hobbs says. He
is a tremendous guard; perfect size with superior ball-handling skills.
Carl gives us more depth in the backcourt, which will allow us to have
more consistency in our transition game.
Elliott was named the Player of the Year and to the All-Tri-State League
team as a senior in a vote by the league coaches. He also earned all-league
honors for football.
BB&T Tournament Tickets On Sale
The field for the eighth annual BB&T Classic at the MCI Center has
been announced. GW and national champion University of Maryland are
again the host schools for the Dec. 78 tournament. Also coming
to the Washington this year are Notre Dame and Texas. Tickets are available
at all Ticketmaster outlets and at Hechts, Kemp Mill Music Stores,
and the MCI Center box office. Proceeds from the tournament benefit
the Childrens Charities Foundation of Greater Washington.
A-10 Announces Honor Roll
One-hundred sixty-one GW student athletes were named to the A-10 Commissioners
Honor Roll. More than 1,600 student-athletes from the leagues
12 schools qualified with GPAs of 3.0 or better. Of the 161 Colonials,
senior Jessica Mantak was recognized as the top student-athlete in gymnastics.
Her 3.73 GPA in liberal arts is coupled with an outstanding gymnastics
career. This year, she had four first-place finishes, including a win
in the floor exercise at the A-10 Championships.
