December 2007 Development Report
Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” GW’s benefactors and friends who understand the power of philanthropy supported the university’s priorities through private gifts and commitments that totaled more than $81 million in fiscal year 2007. The university’s most generous donors—those who made gifts of $100,000 to $5 million—were recognized by President Steven Knapp during the first annual President’s Ball held Nov. 15 at the National Building Museum. The ball coincided with Inauguration week festivities. The donor recognition event, hosted by the Board of Trustees and the Division of Development and Alumni Relations, included an induction ceremony for new members of the University’s premier giving societies. This year, the University welcomed 61 new members into its donor recognition societies. Honored at the President’s Ball were new members of the L’Enfant Society, for annual cumulative giving of $5 million or more; the 1821 Benefactors, for annual cumulative giving of $1 million to $5 million; the George Washington Society, for annual cumulative giving of $100,000 to $999,000 (giving parameters for the George Washington Society are changing to $500,000 to $999,999 for fiscal year 2008); and the Tempietto Circle of the Heritage Society, for planned gifts of $500,000 or more. All of the new inductees were invited to the President’s Ball. Attendees included: • Henry “Ric” C. Duquès, B.B.A. ’65, MBA ’69, and Dawn B. Duquès, B.A. ’69, L’Enfant Society To see a complete list of new inductees or for more information about GW’s recognition societies, please visit www.development. gwu.edu.
