New Additions in Athletics and Recreation

This summer the Department of Athletics and Recreation fielded a full squad of new additions. From softball and baseball to sports information, the department is full of new faces.

Morrison Named Assistant Sports Information Director
Mike Morrison has been named GW’s new assistant sports information director.
Morrison will serve as the primary media relations contact for the GW women’s basketball team as well as the Colonials’ men’s soccer and women’s lacrosse teams. Morrison spent the last two years working in the Syracuse University Athletic Communications Office as a graduate student assistant and intern, while earning his master’s degree in public relations.

GW Makes Mrowka Head Baseball Coach
Steve Mrowka has been hired as the new baseball coach at The George Washington University, Senior Associate Director of Athletics Mary Jo Warner has announced. Mrowka replaces former coach Tom Walter who left in July for a similar position at the University of New Orleans.

Mrowka (pronounced “MROW-kah”) comes to GW after 11 years at Georgia College & State University, an NCAA Division II program located in Milledgeville, GA. At GC&SU, Mrowka posted a 407–231–2 career record (.638 winning percentage). He guided the Bobcats to the NCAA Division II Tournament five times (1995, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002).

“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to coach baseball at an outstanding university like George Washington,” Mrowka said. “I am eager to work with the competitive, high-quality student-athletes at GW and am looking forward to taking on the challenges at GW and in the Atlantic 10 Conference.”

Lombard To Lead Lacrosse

Senior Associate Director of Athletics Mary Jo Warner named Chrissy Lombard head coach for women’s lacrosse.

Lombard will be responsible for all aspects of the lacrosse program, which enters its fourth season as a varsity program in the spring of 2005. Lombard becomes just the second head coach for lacrosse at GW. She replaces Jennifer Morris who resigned to pursue other interests.

She has been the assistant coach for GW lacrosse since the program’s inception in 2002. Lombard came to GW after an outstanding playing career as an All-American attack player for Boston University from 1998 to 2001.

To fill the assistant spot the University selected former Maryland Terrapins standout Michael Howley.

Howley recently completed a stellar playing career at the University of Maryland. As a defenseman, he started 60-of-61 career games for the Terrapins and earned United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-American recognition three times, including first-team accolades as a senior in 2003.

Ferguson Named Softball Head Coach
JoAnne Ferguson was chosen for the softball head coaching position. Ferguson will be responsible for all aspects of the Colonials softball program, which begins its third season in the spring of 2005.

She comes to GW from Kenyon College, a Division III school in Gambier, OH, where she served as head softball coach for the past four seasons (2000–03).

During Ferguson’s years on the KC staff, Kenyon posted a 59–73–1 record, including a 17–15 mark in 2004, the team’s first winning season and only the second time in the program’s seven-year history that they qualified for the conference tournament. Ferguson was named the 2004 North Coast Athletics Conference Coach of the Year. In 2000 her team won 18 games to set the single-season school record for most victories.
