Ellipse Tips

Commencement Parking
Each graduate will receive one parking permit for designated lots valid only for Sunday, May 16. Since parking will be extremely limited on campus and at the Ellipse, it is recommended that guests arrive early or use public transportation to go directly to the Ellipse.

If guests are staying in hotels within the vicinity of the Ellipse, it is recommended that they walk or take a cab to the Ellipse rather than drive.

Public parking is scarce on the streets near the Ellipse and Constitution Avenue between 15th and 23rd streets. There is no reserved Commencement parking in this area.

University Parking Garages

The number of available parking spaces is limited, so arrive early. Guests with permits will be allowed to park in the designated University garages. If designated University parking facilities are full, guests will be directed to another parking lot.
Parking is available at commercial garages for a fee. The locations of the commercial garages are as follows:
• Colonial Parking: Entrance on I Street between 21st and 22nd streets.
• Colonial Parking: Entrance on 20th Street between H Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

Shuttle Bus Service
Those parking on the GW campus may walk to the Ellipse (about 12 minutes) or use the shuttle bus service which leaves campus from I Street between 21st and 22nd streets. Buses will operate continuously between the campus and the Ellipse from 7:30 am until 1 pm. Wheelchair accessible shuttle buses will be in service from all locations.

Additional Transportation
A trip to the Ellipse from a downtown hotel via taxi will cost about $8–$12 depending on the distance traveled and number of people. Taxis usually are available on Constitution Avenue after the ceremony.Guests should take the Metro to the McPherson Square station on either the Blue or Orange lines, and then walk to the Ellipse. The Metro opens at 7 am on Sundays.

Making the Most of Metro

Do you want to explore the District, Maryland and Virginia without driving or taking a cab? Then the Metrorail system has your ticket.

GW has its own Metro station at the corner of 23rd and I streets, next to the GW Hospital. If you’re looking to get to the Ellipse for Commencement activities, take the Blue/Orange lines to McPherson Square and follow the signs to the White House. For the Monumental Celebration on Saturday night, ride the Red line to Union Station. Metro opens at 5:30 am Monday–Friday and 7 am on the weekends. Cars stop running at midnight Sunday–Thursday and at 3 am on Friday and Saturday. At many stations the last train departs before midnight or 3 am, so be sure to check the closing times at each station so you’re not stranded in Silver Spring or Ballston.
