GW’s First Outdoor Ice Skating Rink

Students took a break from the winter doldrums by hitting the ice for five days following a return to classes after the winter break. A temporary outdoor ice rink was constructed on the University’s Foggy Bottom campus, Jan. 15–19, allowing students to brave the frosty temperatures, lace-up their blades and take to the ice.

“This a great way for students to go out and enjoy the winter weather instead of staying cooped up inside,” said Debbie Berger, GW coordinator for student involvement.

The rink featured a portable refrigeration system, but the region’s near-record low temperatures took the high-tech out of the process. In addition to the skating, rink-side GW Welcome Week events included smores, music and coffee bar and outdoor screenings of such ice skating movies as “Mystery, Alaska,” “The Mighty Ducks” and “The Cutting Edge.”

The event was sponsored by the Student Activities Center and the Division of Student and Academic Support Services. Co-sponsors included GW Program Board, GW Residence Hall Association and the GW Panhellenic Association.
