Program Overview

This graduate certificate—offered only online—provides students with the foundational knowledge and skills required to be effective leaders in an educational technology environment. Students acquire leadership skills. They also learn how technology can be effectively applied in their organizations. In this vein, they will be exposed to everything from software and hardware systems to the evaluation of sound educational technology software and implementation plans.

Students who complete the Leadership in Educational Technology Certificate will:

  • Apply foundational leadership principles and theories to learning activities in their workplace
  • Demonstrate an ability to effectively lead the use and implementation of educational technology in a learning environment
  • Demonstrate and apply a comprehensive knowledge of numerous theories, principles, models, tools and techniques associated with leadership and policy making in educational technology
  • Demonstrate their capacity to be a successful leader in an educational technology environment

All 18 credit hours required for this certificate are offered online. Having created one of the first online graduate programs launched in the United States, the experienced program faculty and staff ensure flexibility along with meaningful substance and engaging online participation.

Prior academic records: 

Transcripts are required from all colleges and universities attended, whether or not credit was earned, the program was completed, or the credit appears as transfer credit on another transcript.  Unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended should be uploaded to your online application.  Official transcripts are required only of applicants who are offered admission.

Transcripts from institutions outside the United States must be accompanied by an official transcript evaluation from an accredited independent evaluating agency. Please be sure you request a detailed evaluation that includes all course titles, credit hours, grade-point average (GPA), United States degree equivalency, and date of degree conferral. Statement of purpose:

In an essay of 250 to 500 words, state your purpose in undertaking graduate study at The George Washington University, describing your academic objectives, research interests, and career plans. Also discuss your related qualifications, including collegiate, professional, and community activities and any other substantial accomplishments not already mentioned in the application.

A resumé is required.
