The Women's Studies Program Offices and Staff

The Women's Studies Program Office is located iat 837 22nd St. NW (202-994-6942). During the academic year, a staff person (either our full-time Executive Aide or a work-study student) will usually be at or near the main office during regular hours (9:00 am to 5:00 pm). Staff, class and vacation schedules sometimes result in occasions when no one is in the office. If you have an urgent request or question, it is advisable to telephone in advance.

The Women's Studies Library is located in the lower level of 837 22nd Street.  Library hours are contigent upon classes scheduled in the seminar room. 

The Women's Studies Library collection includes over 1000 books catalogued in a Women's Studies database, back issues of several journals (SIGNS, Feminist Studies, Hypatia), and previous students' MA Theses and Research Projects. Upon request, you can search the databases for the MA Theses and the books. The materials do not circulate, but students are welcome to read them in the Library or make photocopies here at Women's Studies for 5 cents per page

The Program posts all information that comes in, but we cannot honor requests from individual students to "look out" for grants or internships. It is the student’s responsibility to check the Program’s postings regularly.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships

Annually, two full-time GTAships are awarded on a competitive basis. Priority is given to full-time matriculated first-year students, but second-year students may be considered as well. The assistantships involve twenty hours of work per week, assisting in undergraduate classes, assisting with the practicum, and other program-related tasks such as editing the newsletter, organizing the library, and updating alumni information. Past teaching assistantships have provided 18 credit hours and a stipend. See the Graduate Student Handbook for details.  

The IWPR/GW Fellowship in Women's Public Policy Research
Deadline: 5 pm March 1 (or previous Friday, if a weekend)

Generally, each year, one fellowship will be awarded on a competitive basis, with the fellow to be chosen jointly by the Women's Studies Program and the Institute for Women's Policy Research. Fellows will participate in research at IWPR while a full-time graduate student at GW; research may be used toward fulfillment of requirements for WSTU 283, 280, and 295, as well as thesis or dissertation research. The fellowship provides a stipend of $10,000 and 18 hours of tuition credit. Preference will be given to advanced graduate students, particularly to public policy PhD students in the gender and social policy concentration whose thesis topics relate to IWPR research interests. Women's Studies Endowment Award
Deadline: 5 pm March 1 (or previous Friday, if a weekend)

Each year, the Women's Studies Endowment, financed through alumni donations, provides an award of approximately $2000 to a student matriculated in a Women's Studies graduate program in a college or university located in the District of Columbia. (On occasion, the award has been split between two awardees). Application information is available from The Women's Studies Endowment, PO Box 33741, Washington, DC, 20033

The Nicole Paul Endowed Prize in Women's Studies
Deadline: 5 pm March 1 (or previous Friday, if a weekend)

Provided through an endowment made by the parents of Nicole Paul, who was a Women's Studies MA student before her death in 1994, this annual award is about $900. The awardee is selected by a committee comprising the Women's Studies Program Director, two members of the Program faculty, and one student. Applicants should be matriculated students in the GW Women’s Studies MA Program with demonstrated commitment to feminist scholarship and activism. The "Service to the Community of Women" Award
Deadline: 5 pm March 1 (or previous Friday, if a weekend)

This award acknowledges the activism of a GW Women's Studies Program graduate student. Any GW Women's Studies graduate student may apply. Application guidelines and forms are available in the Women's Studies Program office or by clicking here. The award is $100.

Women's Studies Graduate Prize for Feminist Scholarship
Deadline: 5 pm March 1 (or previous Friday, if a weekend)

Any George Washington University Women's Studies Program graduate student can submit a paper for consideration. Click here for the application form.  The prize is $100.

Guidelines for Submissions:

  • Papers must be concerned with feminist scholarship.
  • Papers should be approximately 20 pages in length, double-spaced, 12-point typeface, and include a bibliography or a list of references cited.
  • Three copies should be submitted, with a cover sheet including the student's name, address, phone number, social security number, and the year that the student began at GW.
  • Submissions should be accompanied by an abstract that describes the work in a paragraph or two, and explains how the work originated, i.e., as part of a thesis, a course paper, etc.

The "Making a Difference" Award
Deadline:  5 pm March 1 (or previous Friday, if a weekend)

The primary goal of this award is to encourage original research, stimulate critical thinking and shape on-going debates on one, or more than one, related topics concerning women. The paper would cover the purpose, implementation, outcomes and impacts of legislation, policies and programs that include or are aimed specifically at women on subjects such as aging, health, violence against women, wage equity, child-care, safety net issues and human rights.  The Award is made possible by the generous support of Clara Schiffer.  The amount is yet to be determined.

Students are invited to submit a paper of not more than 20 pages for review by the committee comprising members of faculty from Women’s Studies and related areas such as Public Policy, representative(s) from policy oriented research bodies such IWPR, and a GW alum.  The committee will review the papers according to the stated criteria. The Committee may, if it feels necessary, call upon other experts to assist in its deliberation.  An additional required application form is available in Women's Studies or by clicking here.

Criteria: The committee will be looking for original work which falls within the scope of the award. The paper should have been initiated in a Women’s Studies course (i.e. one with a WSTU prefix).

Eligibility: This prize is open to all undergraduate and graduate students taking a course with a Women’s Studies prefix (i.e. WSTU) during the current year.
 

 

Undergraduate Awards

Oustanding Contribution by an Undergraduate Major Award
Deadline:  March 1, 5 pm

This award is open to Women's Studies majors and acknowledges outstanding commitment to the interests of women by way of activism, service and scholarship.

Please submit a statement which includes the following:
 

  • Women's Studies courses you have taken, 
  • your activities
  • names of 2 faculty who would act as referrals 
  • a statement about how your work helps to advance our knowledge of women and/or a statement regarding the role activism plays in your life
  • the cover sheet should include your full name (including middle name), address and Social Security number.


You may also nominate your colleagues for this award.

The award is $50.

Feminist Scholarship Award for Undergraduates
Deadline:  March 1, 5 pm

This award is open to Women's Studies majors and minors and acknowledges outstanding undergraduate scholarship.
 

  • applicants turn in a paper concerned with feminist scholarship. The paper may be one you have written for a course, if it is, please indicate thename of the course, the name of the professor, and any requirements for the paper. The paper should be 7+ pages in length.
  • the cover sheet should include your full name (including middle name), address and Social Security number.


The award is $50.
