THE GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN WOMEN'S STUDIES

What is the Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies?

The Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies provides students already enrolled in graduate degree programs other than Women's Studies as well as qualified non-degree students with an opportunity to think and learn about gender in a systematic and integrated manner from a variety of methodological approaches. The Certificate is designed to provide an interdisciplinary course of study on women and gender to enrich a student's disciplinary or professional training.

Who may enroll in the Graduate Certificate program?

The Graduate Certificate will be offered to students enrolled in M.A. and Ph.D. degree programs at The George Washington University and to qualified non-degree students who have at least a Bachelor's degree.

What are the requirements and courses?

The Certificate requires a minimum of 18 credit hours (6 courses), including a 9-hour core requirement consisting of Women's Studies 220 (Fundamentals of Feminist Theory), 221 (Research Issues in Women's Studies), and 225 (Contemporary Feminist Theory). The remaining nine credits will be chosen, in consultation with the Women's Studies graduate certificate advisor, from graduate level Women's Studies and relevant departmental courses that will support the student's area of specialization in graduate study (or their professional development interests for non-degree students). The courses selected should form a coherent program of study related to the student's academic goals, and must be approved by a Women's Studies advisor.
