Notes From the Editor

Jen Frazier

Hello and welcome to a new issue of GW Feminist Review. As you will notice, this edition focuses strictly on reviews and current events. I was unable to add a Poetry and Prose section or an Opinion Page due to lack of submissions. I would like to provide a venue in which GW students can voice concerns, but in order for me to do that I need to hear from you. As I mentioned last time, this publication is meant to represent any issues, either on campus or in the community, of concern to women. I cannot cover it all, and encourage as much participation as possible.

On that note, I am very pleased to point out that several undergraduate Women’s Studies students added their voices to this issue with their reviews of women’s history month events. I would like to take this opportunity to extend an offer to all undergraduates who may want to contribute in the future--please feel free to submit articles for consideration. Drop them in my box in 506 Funger or email them to frazierj@gwu.edu.

As you will notice, there is a concentration on legislative and judicial events in this issue. I would like to continue

this trend by keeping you apprised of some of the governmental affairs that directly impact women’s lives. After all, we are in Washington and it is important to keep up to date on these issues.

This does not mean, however, that I will ignore other important happenings on the campus and in the community. I will also try to report on social and cultural events in the area as well. Again I cannot possibly cover it all and need your help.

I would also like to start an ongoing alumnae column to keep readers informed as to the current happenings in other alum’s lives. If you have recently changed jobs, been promoted, had a child, etc., and would like to let other alums know, drop me a line so I can add it to the column. It will also help current and future students see what great possibilities await us after graduation.

I would like to thank Jen Sleboda for her editorial assistance in the preparation of this issue. I really appreciate it. Thanks to all those who did contribute to this issue. Hope you enjoy it and have a great summer!

Listen Up!

WPFW 89.3, Pacifica, is a public radio station in Washington, D.C. which offers a variety of excellent programming for progressive audiences, in addition to an excellent program of jazz and international music (from Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America). The station is fully sponsored by individual memberships and does not accept corporate sponsors or underwriters-it truly belongs to the community. Two programs of note are:

  • Democracy Now!, hosted by Amy Goodman. It airs from 9-10 a.m. Monday through Friday. It is a top-notch, in-depth, grassroots, radical news program which (un)covers important issues not addressed or even touched upon by the mainstream, corporate media. It covers issues nationally and internationally concerning feminism and women's issues, lesbian and gay rights, labor rights, the effects of globalization and transnational capitalism, social and economic justice, political prisoners, race relations, grassroots political and social movements throughout the world, among many others. If you miss the program on the radio, you can listen to it on their website at www.pacifica.org. Highly recommended!
  • Sophie's Parlor radio show, Fridays 1-2 pm. Feminist/lesbian/women's music and commentary.
