Linda Grant De Pauw
Professor of History
Professor De Pauw will be retiring from GWU after 33 years of service as of the end of the fall semester 1998. She developed and taught the first women's history course here in 1972. Her book Battle Cries and Lullabies: A Brief History of Women in War from Prehistory to the Present will be published next fall by the University of Oklahoma Press.
Anne Kasper
Associate Professorial Lecturer in Women's Studies
Professor Kasper's research, Experiences of Poor and Low Income Women with Breast Cancer has been funded by the US Public Health Service, Agency for Health Care Policy Research. The study, which is being conducted in Washington, DC and Chicago, IL, explores the barriers and burdens these women face when diagnosed with the disease.
Dr. Kasper has taken an appointment as Scientist in the Public Interest with the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, a division of the American Psychological Association. Her work will be to establish links between the academy and policy makers on a number of timely and troubling social issues of her choice.
Ruth Krulfeld
Professor of Anthropology
Professor Krulfeld's article, "When The 'Powerless' Take Control: Self-Empowerment Through Organization-Building Among Lao Refugee Women," has just been published by the American Anthropological Association, in the book: Beyond Boundaries: Selected Papers On Refugee And Immigrant Issues, co-edited by Diane Baxter and Ruth M. Krulfeld, 1997. It is available starting in November 1997 from AAA, Arlington, VA for about $7.50 for AAA members, $10 for non-members.
Melani McAlister
Assistant Professor of American Civilization
Research issues include the intersections between U.S. national identity, foreign policy, and ideologies of race and gender. Her book, Staging the American Century: Race, Gender, and Nation in US Representations of the Middle East, is under advance contract with University of California Press. In the last year, she has presented papers at the American Studies Association and the British American Studies Association in Birmingham, England. She was also one of the featured authors in the Women's Studies program's fall reception and presentation. All of her courses, including her undergraduate seminar in Cultural Criticism and her graduate seminar in Culture and Imperialism, prominently feature the analysis of both gender and sexuality.

Gail Weiss

Professor Weiss recently completed her book, Body Images: Embodiment as Intercorporeality. It is being published by Routledge Press and will be out in 1998. In addition, Routledge will be publishing an anthology she co-edited entitled, Perspectives on Embodiment: The Intersection between Nature and Culture in the fall of 1998.
