New Student Group, New Film Festival
Edwina Langenberg-Miller, Senior Women's Studies Major
Fore Spoken is a new student group on campus affiliated with the Women's Studies
Program. For our first event, we hosted a film festival entitled Gender
Issue: The Clara Schiffer Film Festival. Although the attendance was low,
spirits were high as the GW and surrounding community jumped into amazing nights
of film, speakers and discussion.
Some of the nights included topics involving the international sex trade, female
genital mutilation and transgender identities. Speakers accompanied most nights
to rouse discussion following the film about everything from creative license
while making a film, cult followings, to the fall of the Soviet Union.
Highlighting all of these speakers was Bee Sakwa who sold everything she owned
and tricked her late husband's family into thinking she was only staying a short
time in America to escape the Female Genital Mutilation of her daughter.
Fore Spoken will continue to be an active presence on campus. For next semester,
we are planning a speaker series and several other small activities. We are
looking for more members and several more executive board positions. If you are
interested contact me at Edwina@gwu.edu or the Women's Studies Program because
we would love to have you.
