When this year’s Gallup Leadership Summit met in D.C. in October, GW was well represented by a symposium entitled “Developing a New Generation of Women Leaders” presented by members of GW’s Women’s Leadership Institute (WLI). Chaired by Dr. Lynn Offermann, the panel consisted of three papers presenting work on women’s unique needs as learners through a developmental perspective (Dr. Ruth Axelrod), shared data from emerging women leaders as to their leadership development needs and challenges (I/O grad student Nadeeka Jayatilake and Dr. Lynn Offermann), and presented data from leadership training efforts designed to move talented women from more hidden leadership roles to more visible leadership where it can be readily acknowledged, rewarded, and advanced (Dr. Gelaye Debebe). Dr. Elizabeth Davis, WLI Director, served as discussant, providing expert commentary on how to best develop emerging women leaders, and a facilitated discussion with panel and audience opened a dialogue on how to encourage leadership development in young women around the world.
