Residencies and Internships

Administrative residencies are full-time positions that are part of the MHSA program and are taken after the completion of all coursework. Residencies are available at approved sites in the Washington-Baltimore area, throughout the United States, and at selected sites abroad. Students earn a total of 9 credit hours during the period of the residency, applied as 3 credits for each of the three semesters during the 12 months. Residency positions usually provide some financial compensation and other benefits. The MHSA-LTC program offers students the opportunity to apply the concepts taught in the classroom to a workplace setting. GW's pool of preceptors includes highly qualified administrators at LTC organizations all over the country.

Residencies

Residencies are generally required for the Health Services Management specialization. If permission is granted, students may substitute an internship and additional coursework. The full-time residencies are available to students after the completion of all course work and can fulfill the Administrator-In-Training (AIT) requirement which is essential to students interested in becoming licensed nursing home administrators.

Internships

Internships require a minimum of 280 hours at the internship site for 3 credits in one semester and are taken during the last half of the MHSA degree program. Both the internship and residency arrangements expand classroom knowledge by offering practical experience. They also provide opportunities for students to network with employers and transition into professional positions when career decisions are made.
