WID Funding Initiatives


Instructional Assistants (IA)

  • graduate students in a MA or Phd program.
  • they normally support faculty in their major department, but they can also assist faculty in different disciplines. support for WID courses with 20 or more students.
  • IAs receive a salary that is based upon the enrollment of the course and the degree program the student is in. An MA student with a course enrollment of 20 would receive a salary of $1000 for the semester and would be expected to work 5 hours per week.
  • IAs are not permitted to work more than 20 hours per week.

IA Duties

  • grading and evaluating for the writing intensive part of the course.
  • design assignments.
  • lead discussion sections.
  • lead peer review meetings.
  • hold office hours to consult with individual students.
  • locate and prepare materials or activities that are relevant to the teaching topic.

Peer Writing Preceptors (PWP)

  • undergraduate students who assist faculty in their major department.
  • all PWPs receive $1000 over the course of the semester and the faculty member receives $500 in exchange for serving as a "mentor" or "coach" for the student.
  • PWP's typically work 8 hours per week

PWP Duties

  • provide responses and suggestions for improvements on student writing.
  • review outlines and rough drafts for coherence, clarity of purpose, argument, etc.
  • lead peer review meetings.
  • PWPs do not grade papers.
