PAPER TITLE: "Jonestown: A Lens into the Phenomenon of Conspiracy Theory"
Response by Kip Koseck, Assistant Professor of American Studies

Paper Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to use the events at Jonestown as a lens to learn more about the prevelance of, and belief in, the societal phenomenon of conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories provide people with an identifiable foe and an explanation for unexplicable events, which in turn brings sense to a seemingly senseless world.

This event is free and open to the public. 

Current UW20 students, faculty, librarians, and affiliated friends are all encouraged to attend.

About the Lecture Series

The First-Year Writing Student Lecture Series is an opportunity for current and former UW20 students to present their writing to an audience of faculty, students, and family.

The mission of the series is to provide a public forum for student writers who demonstrate a high level of commitment to their writing, whose writing demonstrates critical thinking and intellectual engagement, and whose writing  creates an opportunity for members of the GW community to see writing as a public event and writers as public intellectuals.

Call for Submissions

Current and former UW20 students are invited to participate in the Student Lecture Series. The selection process for participation involves emailing a Word doc of a finished essay to the faculty administrator of the Series who then presents all submissions to a panel of reviewers. The editorial collective consists of UWP faculty and past Student Lecture Series presenters. Members of the editorial collective are:
