Teacher Licensure

The Teachers 2000 Partnership prepares students for licensure in the District of Columbia, and Maryland.  The Partnership is approved under the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) as well as the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) standards through the District of Columbia. Individuals completing the GW program should be eligible for licensure in NASDTEC's member states, though any given state may have additional requirements.

PRAXIS I and II

Completion of GWU's teacher preparation programs requires satisfactory results on the PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II as required by the District of Columbia, and Maryland. PRAXIS I measures a prospective teacher's competency in reading, writing and mathematics. PRAXIS II is a subject assessment that measures content area knowledge and pedagogy.

Guidelines for Licensure

The Office of Laboratory Experiences (OLE) will verify that a student has completed one of our licensure programs and has completed coursework in their specialization. Students will need to provide the following to facilitate this process.

GWU transcript showing ALL licensure coursework has been completed

• Unofficial copies of PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II scores.

• Grade sheets/unofficial transcripts showing any content area deficiency coursework.

• Copy of your original program plan. If you need to copy, call 202-994-9283.

• Make a copy of this packet for your records.

• Have your advisor sign the Licensure Verification Request Form.

• Submit the Licensure Verification Request Form (PDF) with all documents attached to:

For specific details on how to obtain a state teaching license, refer to the OLE website. Please keep in mind that "verification for eligibility for licensure" in your content area is not a teaching license. A teaching license can only be given by a state Department of Education. GWU can only verify for the state that you are eligible to apply for a teaching license. Once you have received this "verification for eligibility" from GW, you must then contact the state Department of Education in order to obtain your teaching license. If you have specific questions about this, please contact Dr. Patricia Tate at ptate@gwu.edu or 202-994-6166, or ole@gwu.edu.

Please contact 202-973-1593 for additional information.
