Summer Program for Women in Mathematics
Mathematics Films

Friday evenings are devoted to mathematical films, selected on the basis of their mathematical content, the quality of their presentation, and their cultural and philosophical insights. Content of the films supplement our guest lectures and the curricula in our classrooms; each show is followed by a group discussion. The GW library has an extensive collection of appropriate films.

In the past years, we have shown the following films:

  • Breaking the Code
  • Birth of Modern Geometry
  • Liberation of Algebra
  • Mathematical Mystery Tour
  • N is a Number
  • Not Knot
  • Outside in
  • The Story of Pi
  • The Vernacular Tradition

The participants have found these films to be entertaining and informative and have gained a historical perspective which is not customarily present in a typical mathematics classroom.
