COSPAR PEX Workshop Program

“International Earth-based research program as a stepping stone for global space exploration”

The Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) Panel on Exploration (PEX) hosted this workshop at the Space Policy Institute in Washington DC from 2-4 March 2011, to provide a kick-off for an “International Earthbased research program as a stepping stone for global space exploration.” The workshop focused on the general structure of an international program that pursues compelling science goals and prepares for future robotic and human exploration of Earth, Moon and Mars and other targets in space. Participants gathered from the international science expert community; national science foundations (ESF/ESSC, NSF); national and international field research programs (CAREX, SCAR, PISCES, Europlanet); national/international space exploration working groups (MEPAG, ILEWG), space agency representatives; astrobiology networks (NAI, EANA), and successful established international programs (IPY, COML, IODP, ISU). The recommendations of the workshop are summarized in a COSPAR_report and used to guide policy choices of national science foundations, national space agencies and national/international space exploration working groups.
