M.A. Program for those with Bachelor Degree in SLP

Students complete a core curriculum of required courses and electives to meet their 40 credit hours over a five consecutive semester period. The core courses cover the essential content areas included in the scope of practice of speech language pathology. In addition, all students complete a set of core practicum rotations in the Speech and Hearing Center that provide them with well rounded supervised clinical experiences. With the help of their advisor, students may choose elective classes and externship sites in order to further their specific interests in pediatric, medical, language disorders, voice disorders, or neurologic communication disorders.

Students may choose either a thesis or non-thesis option as part of the requirements of the graduate program. In the non-thesis option, students register for 34 semester hours of course work and 6 semester hours of clinical practicum. In the thesis option, students register for 28 semester hours of course work, 6 semester hours of thesis research, and 6 semester hours of clinical practicum. Students choosing the non-thesis option take a departmental comprehensive examination during their last semester of graduate study. Those students choosing the thesis option do a thesis presentation in lieu of the comprehensive examination. All students take the National Examination in Speech-Language Pathology (PRAXIS) during their last semester.

Students choosing to do a thesis develop a proposal with a faculty advisor and then conduct their research under the direction of a thesis committee. The decision to do a thesis is made by the end of the second semester of one's graduate program and must be pre-approved by the faculty.

This is the two year (5 semester) course of study for the Graduate degree in speech-language pathology. Further information and course description can be found at: http://www.gwu.edu/~bulletin
