Summer Institute in Native American Health
For a detailed flyer on the program, please click here. Native Americans suffer health disparities at higher rates than any other group in the United States. This program consists of two courses that give students a general understanding of some issues facing those involved in healthcare in Native American communities. The first course gives students an overview of the history of healthcare for Native Americans including the basis of US Federal Trust obligations and Indian Sovereignty that underlies the entire system. The epidemiology of common health issues affecting Native Americans and reasons for the high rate of disparities is also explored and diseases with the highest morbidity and mortality rates are reviewed in detail. Speakers from a variety of organizations and agencies involved in the field will add to the instructors' lectures throughout the course. A field trip to visit the Indian Health Service is also planned. The second course takes a closer look at specific issues through a series of case studies that are chosen for their complexity and the opportunity they offer students to explore the many factors that impact health and efforts at policy development and clinical care. In this course students take an active role in putting together the puzzle that each case presents. Review of these cases also gives students an opportunity to see how many of the legal, policy, and clinical issues that they have been reading and learning about actually play out in specific communities and offer more realistic impressions of just how difficult it can be to address health disparities. These cases also offer insights into successful interventions and actions on the part of the local communities as well as those working at a distance. Cost: $4,264, tuition; $50, fees (field trip, group meals) For more information: Contact instructors David Goldsmith or Stephanie St. Pierre. NOTE: Please be advised that the fees listed are based on estimates and are subject to change. GW reserves the right to cancel this program at any time without notice.
