Housing
Nestled among 26 wooded acres of private residences and embassies in Northwest Washington, DC, GW's Mount Vernon campus is a scenic 10-minute shuttle ride along the Potomac River, up the hill from the Foggy Bottom campus. Bordered by the C & O Canal and historic Georgetown, the gated grounds provide an intimate setting for living and learning.
Many lessons of college are learned in the residence halls through social interaction and collegial exchange with roommates and community residents;* consequently, Summer Scholars are housed together in dorms at Mount Vernon to facilitate camaraderie and continued learning. Planned activities, floor meetings, and late evening fun will make it easy for students to build a community. The residence halls are staffed with Residential Advisors (RA's), student leaders who are experienced and highly trained. RAs provide support, guidance, and supervision for Summer Scholars and will assist in organizing a full range of extracurricular activities. RAs also host weekly floor meetings, a forum where students discuss community living matters and plan activities.
Residential floors are coed, although suites are single-sex. Roommates share a double room that is air-conditioned, cable and phone-ready, fully furnished, and equipped with a micro-fridge. A community/TV lounge and kitchen, computer labs, vending machines, and laundry facilities are located on the ground floor. Internet access is available for an additional fee. The wireless campus is equipped with dining and recreational facilities, a 24-hour computer lab, and the Eckles Library, located directly across from the residence halls. Entrances to the residence halls are secure, and the halls are regularly patrolled by campus police.
*Housing costs are built into the residential student tuition price.
Safety and Health While Living @ GW
Safety and well-being are our first priorities and we anticipate a very safe and healthy summer, as GW is committed to ensuring a safe and secure campus for its community. The University's location in the heart of Washington, DC places it in one of the most protected and safest areas in the city. GW's University Police Department is proactive in promoting a "Community of Safety," and providing a full range of protective and crime prevention services to the GW community. In addition to preventative safety talks, each student receives a Smart Card with contact information for use in the event of an emergency. Both the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses are patrolled around the clock and the Mount Vernon Campus is also gated and staffed with 24-hour onsite security. However, we will not hesitate to contact parents should a situation warrant parental attention.
To help ensure their safety, students are expected to abide by the curfew policy, as detailed in the Summer Scholars Code of Conduct.
Student Health Services at Foggy Bottom is staffed with medical professionals who can assist students with routine medical concerns. A charge is rendered for this service ($20/visit). Situations requiring emergency medical assistance will be referred to area hospitals. Staff will accompany students and parents or guardians will be notified.
