6-week Program
For Current 11th Graders ONLY
Program Dates: July 6- August 15, 2008
High School juniors who will have completed 11th grade by this summer and who have a demonstrated record of academic achievement are selected to participate in this 6-week residential pre-college program. Program participants enroll in an elective course taken with undergraduate students (a list of course options can be found here. In addition, all students are enrolled in the Writing Seminar for Summer Scholars, a theme-based introduction to academic writing. Courses are taught at the Foggy Bottom campus and the Mount Vernon campus, where Summer Scholars reside. Scholars engage in an intensive program of study that infuses intellectual pursuit with programs that introduce them to scholarly communities and the vast resources of a major university. The challenging courses, independent living environment, and the university's urban setting require students who demonstrate academic readiness, self-sufficiency, and the maturity necessary for balancing competing academic and social demands. Limited scholarships are available.
Afternoons and weekends are open to academic exploration and general recreation on and off campus. Students can explore the academic communities that make up a campus. They can learn about interdisciplinary curricular options; or they can find out what it takes to get into competitive medical programs or law schools through information sessions with GW departments and trips to other local education institutions. Additionally, students can get a sense of greater DC culture and interest through outings to the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian, and even downtown Annapolis and Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Both academic and recreational "down-time" excursions are planned and chaperoned by the Resident Advisors – the students' supervisors in the dorms.
