How to Apply

Applications to Summer Scholars are accepted on a rolling and space-available basis. Program enrollments are limited. An early application is encouraged. Acceptance to the program does not imply admission to the University.

All portions of applications, both domestic and international, for the 10-Day Mini-Course program and 6-Week Pre-College should be sent to:

Applying to the 10-Day Program

Admission to the mini-courses is open to academically motivated students who are currently in grades 9, 10, and 11. The application deadline is extended to May 25, 2008.

Interested students must submit the following:

  • A completed Summer Scholars application. Students may either submit Online or they may send a Downloadable Paper Application
  • A $30 (USD) nonrefundable application fee (U.S. applicants only; checks made payable to The George Washington University).
  • An official high school transcript through the most current fall term.
  • A completed Guidance Counselor Recommendation Form
  • A 200-word essay discussing why the course that you have chosen is of interest to you.
  • A 150-word essay describing your expectations about participating in an independent summer college experience.
  • Photocopies of available standardized test scores (optional).

Applying to the 6-Week Pre-College Program

Admission to the 6-Week program is open to academically motivated current 11th graders. Due to the intensive nature of the academic program and the freedom students have to manage their days, the program is best suited for self-sufficient students who demonstrate the academic readiness and motivation, and personal maturity necessary for study in an urban college environment. The application deadline is June 1, 2008.

Interested students must submit the following:

  • A completed Summer Scholars application. Students may either submit Online or they may send a Downloadable Paper Application
  • A $30 (USD) nonrefundable application fee (U.S. applicants only; checks made payable to The George Washington University).
  • An official high school transcript through the most current fall term.
  • A completed Guidance Counselor Recommendation Form
  • A second letter of recommendation from a teacher that speaks to your social maturity and academic readiness to participate in an intensive, college-level program.
  • A 200-word essay discussing why the course that you have chosen is of interest to you.
  • A 150-word essay describing your expectations about participating in an independent summer college experience.
  • Photocopies of available standardized test scores (optional).
  • A Financial Aid Form (optional).

Applying as an International Student

The application deadline for international students is April 15, 2008. International students interested in either the 10-Day Mini-Course Program or the 6-Week Pre-College Program must submit the following (all supporting documents should be translated to English):

  • A completed Summer Scholars application. Students may either submit Online or they may send a Downloadable Paper Application
  • A completed International Student Supplemental Application Form.
  • Copies of the front and back of supporting visa documentation (see Part 2 of International Student Supplemental Application).
  • Current financial documentation (see Part 3 of International Student Supplemental Application).
  • Official TOEFL scores (a minimum score of 213 on the computer-based test or 550 on paper-based test is required).
  • A $70 (USD) nonrefundable application fee (payable to The George Washington University).
  • A completed Guidance Counselor Recommendation Form
  • A second teacher letter of recommendation, in English, discussing your social maturity and academic readiness to participate in an intensive college-level program
  • A copy of the biographic page in your passport
